Another favourite Genre! Things are looking up for me. Garbage were a breath of fresh air in the mid '90s. Grunge was taking hold everywhere around the world and Rap was only in its post natal years.
"Garbage's angry, emotional lyrics contrasted with their catchy, pop alternative rock music. Garbage utilizes samples, electronic loops, grungy guitars, and various other effects to produce haunting and melodic tracks, made distinctive by Scottish singer Shirley Manson's sultry vocals. The fact that Garbage is composed of three music producers is made obvious by the high production quality, with many layers and a "wall of sound" production aesthetic.
Known publicly as an experimental group like Brit band Radiohead, Garbage used their powerful videos to distort the dimensions of their songs."
Along with Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, , et el, made the mid nineties a great place to be musically. One hopes Alt Rock will be a force again in the millennium, because between you and me, its getting a bit boring at the moment aye Nelly?

Talk about one extreme from another, earlier in "The Definitive 1000 Songs Of All Time 1955 to 2005" (see number 892) Berlin did that song, com'n you know the one, dont play dumb now. Yet in 1986 they released this pop syrupy love ballad "Take my breath away" to an even greater acclaim. Or was it because of a film? Oh well, i'm pretty sure it was the song....

"Before Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, pre-Shirley Manson and Garbage and dozens of other current sensations, there was Berlin - the American Progenitor of electro-pop and sexy provocation fronted by the enigmatic Terri Nunn. And while many bands that had tremendous success in the '80s are the recipients of tributes today, few have had as far-reaching an impact or grooves nearly as timeless as those of Berlin."
"Their success began early, vaulting a self-produced debut EP into gold sales status (1982’s Pleasure Victim). From there, the band earned a major label deal with Geffen, where they went on to produce enduringly edgy tunes like “No More Words,” “Now It’s My Turn” and “Take My Breath Away,” the smoldering, Giorgio Moroder-produced love song that propelled the sales of millions of copies of the Top Gun soundtrack. “Take My Breath Away” also spawned an international number-one single, a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award."

Today's generation have Marilyn Manson (you remember the Manson family don't you? Charles, Marilyn & Shirley, now there's a reality show!) in the early 80's we had Robert Smith. Is he a freak? Nah. The Cure were "Goth" and they were the leaders at their genre.

"The Cure are a successful English rock band, widely seen as one of the leading pioneers of the British alternative rock scene of the 1980s. A combination of lead singer Robert Smith's iconic wild hair, pale complexion, smudged lipstick, and the frequently gloomy and introspective lyrics have led to the band being primarily classified as gothic rock. Smith rejects this and other attempts to confine the band to a single genre. The Cure have sold close to 50 million albums worldwide."

I wonder if Ricky ever saw that Idol show where the Asian man sang his beloved "She Bangs"? Snort.
Did a search (couldn't resist)....
"In early 2004, William Hung earned brief fame after singing the song during his audition for the third season of American Idol, although rejected by the judges, his disastrously poor performance amused audiences, and Hung continued to perform and record the song for comedic purposes. In April 2004, Blender magazine named his version of "She Bangs" one of the 50 worst songs ever."
