"Ugly Kid Joe (whose name is a response to Pretty Boy Floyd) formed in Isla Vista, California, and features vocalist Whitfield Crane, guitarists Klaus Eichstadt and Dave Fortman (who replaced Roger Lahr), bassist Cordell Crockett, and drummer Mark Davis. The group played basic pop-metal with touches of funk and a bratty, parodic sense of humor. Their debut single, "Everything About You," went Top Ten and helped their mini-album As Ugly as They Wanna Be become the first short-form LP ever to be certified multi-platinum. They went Top Ten again with a straightforward cover of Harry Chapin's "Cats In the Cradle" in 1993. The band released their second full-length album, Menace to Sobriety, in 1995; Motel California appeared the next year.

"Along with the Specials, Madness were one of the leading bands of the ska revival of the late '70s and early '80s. As their career progressed, Madness branched away from their trademark "nutty sound" and incorporated large elements of Motown, soul, and British pop. Although the band managed one crossover American hit in 1983, the band remained a British phenomenon, influencing several successive generations of musicians and becoming one of the most beloved groups the country produced during the '80s."
"For their second album, Madness continued the bright and bouncy fun of their debut. Absolutely placed slightly more emphasis on their novelty aspect, creating something of a fun-house atmosphere with stray sounds, exaggerated accents, faster tempos, and often unintelligible lyrics rattled off by Suggs at breakneck speed. Although the album shows a dip in quality control and much less diversity than One Step Beyond, it is nevertheless a charming romp with its share of inspired moments, like the classic singles "Baggy Trousers" and "Embarrasment."
