If anything for a film title "Avatar" should have been called "Cat People" Maybe I should have turned that sentence into a question [? .. hmmm] So, what are the Top Ten films David Bowie has been in? Well ... Wikipedia explain it like this .. "Cat People is a 1982 erotic horror film directed by Paul Schrader and starring Nastassja Kinski, Malcolm McDowell, and John Heard. Alan Ormsby wrote the screenplay, basing it loosely on the story by DeWitt Bodeen, the screenwriter for the acclaimed 1942 original. Giorgio Moroder composed the film's score, including the theme song which features lyrics and vocals by David Bowie."

Rotten Tomatoes give the film a 64% Tomatometer rating and good ole IMDB 5.9 stars out of 10. Leonard Maltin gave no opinion [i gather], but, Ivana Redwine from about.com did have this to report "But Irena is unaware that both she and her brother are cat people, a sort of feline-human hybrid that upon becoming sexually aroused reverts to a violent, animalistic state." followed by "I found Cat People worth watching, but it was a guilty pleasure."

Schrader engaged Bowie for a theme song in 1981, with Moroder having already recorded most of the music. Bowie was to put lyrics to the main theme. The words only had a basic relation to the film. The B-side is a Moroder-only instrumental which featured no input from Bowie. The song itself, in keeping with the dark tone of the film, has some slight goth rock influences, with Bowie singing in a deep croon while being backed up by a female chorus, a combination that The Sisters of Mercy would commonly employ years later. Because of Moroder's contract, the single was issued by MCA. The full-length version appeared on the soundtrack album, and the 12" single, while a 4:08 edited version was made for the 7" release. The single reached #26 in the UK, and #67 in the US - Bowie's biggest hit there since "Golden Years". It peaked at #1 in New Zealand, remaining there for three weeks [Oh, that probably explains something], as well as in Sweden for four weeks. It was also #1 in Norway for seven consecutive weeks, and then returned to the top for a further week.

In 1983, Bowie re-recorded the song for his album Let's Dance. This version was also released as the B-side to the title track's single release, and performed on Bowie's Serious Moonlight Tour. Bowie settled in New York to record the paranoiac Scary Monsters (Number 12, 1980), updating "Space Oddity" in "Ashes to Ashes." One of the first stars to understand the potential of video, he produced some innovative clips for songs from Lodger and Scary Monsters. After that album, Bowie turned his attention away from his recording career. In 1980 he played the title role in The Elephant Man, appearing in Denver, in Chicago and on Broadway. He collaborated with Queen on 1981's "Under Pressure" and provided lyrics and vocals for "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" (Number 67, 1982), Giorgio Moroder's title tune for the soundtrack of Paul Schrader's remake of Cat People. His music was used on the soundtrack of Christiane F (1982), and he also appeared in the film. That year, Bowie also starred in the BBC-TV production of Brecht's Baal, and as a 150-year-old vampire in the movie The Hunger. ~ [Source: RS]

Defining Ry Cooder into a music category is sort of liking a Lady Gaga into ANY category of sound. Well ... at least Ry Cooder should be defined into a music category whereas Lady Gaga should be .... ah .. well you know.

Anyway, Ry Cooder is a musicians musician, although he is not considered a contemporary artist nor a chart making success, he is considered [by many, not just me] to be a backbone to music .. a sort of soul to be ones being. Ry Cooder can boast featuring with and influencing many artists, such as Rolling Stones, Little Feat, Captain Beefheart, Van Morrison, John Lee Hooker, Freddy Fender & Nick Lowe [to name a small few].

Ry has been performing music since the 60's and his last album was released in 2008 "I, Flathead". By the way .... Ry Cooder was voted by Rolling Stone Magazine as 8th in the world for The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, which is ironic as they [RS] find none of his songs noteworthy. ~ crowbarred

Whether serving as a session musician, solo artist, or soundtrack composer, Ry Cooder's chameleon-like fretted instrument virtuosity, songwriting, and choices of material encompass an incredibly eclectic range of North American musical styles, including rock & roll, blues, reggae, Tex-Mex, Hawaiian, Dixieland jazz, country, folk, R&B, gospel, and vaudeville. The 16-year-old Cooder began his career in 1963 in a blues band with Jackie DeShannon and then formed the short-lived Rising Sons in 1965 with Taj Mahal and Spirit drummer Ed Cassidy. Cooder met producer Terry Melcher through the Rising Sons and was invited to perform at several sessions with Paul Revere & the Raiders. Cooder made his debut as a solo artist in 1970 with a self-titled album featuring songs by Leadbelly, Blind Willie Johnson, Sleepy John Estes, and Woody Guthrie. The follow-up, Into the Purple Valley, introduced longtime cohorts Jim Keltner on drums and Jim Dickinson on bass, and it and Boomer's Story largely repeated and refined the syncopated style and mood of the first. In 1974, Cooder produced what is generally regarded as his best album, Paradise and Lunch, and its follow-up, Chicken Skin Music, showcased a potent blend of Tex-Mex, Hawaiian, gospel, and soul music, and featured contributions from Flaco Jimenez and Gabby Pahinui. In 1979, Bop Till You Drop was the first major-label album to be recorded digitally. In the early '80s, Cooder began to augment his solo output with soundtrack work on such films as Blue Collar, The Long Riders, and The Border; he has gone on to compose music for Southern Comfort, Goin' South, Paris, Texas, Streets of Fire, Alamo Bay, Blue City, Crossroads, Cocktail, Johnny Handsome, Steel Magnolias, and Geronimo. Music by Ry Cooder (1995) compiled two discs' worth of highlights from Cooder's film work.

In 1992, Cooder joined Keltner, John Hiatt, and renowned British tunesmith Nick Lowe, all of whom had played on Hiatt's Bring the Family, to form Little Village, which toured and recorded one album. Cooder next turned his attention to world music, recording the album A Meeting by the River with Indian musician V.M. Bhatt. Cooder's next project, a duet album with renowned African guitarist Ali Farka Touré titled Talking Timbuktu, won the 1994 Grammy for Best World Music Recording. His next world crossover would become one of the most popular musical rediscoveries of the 20th century. In 1997 Cooder traveled to Cuba to produce and play with a group of son musicians who had little exposure outside of their homeland. The resulting album, Buena Vista Social Club, was a platinum-selling international success that made stars of Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, and Rubén González and earned Cooder another Grammy. He continued to work on projects with his Buena Vista bandmates, including a collaboration with Manuel Galbán in 2003 titled Mambo Sinuendo. His other work in the 2000s included sessions with James Taylor, Aaron Neville, Warren Zevon, and Spanish diva Luz Casal. Ry Cooder is a virtuoso on fretted instruments"slide guitar, mandolin, Mexican tiple, banjo, Middle Eastern saz"who crossbreeds his own sense of syncopation with vernacular musics. As a fan/musicologist, he has sought out local styles such as calypso, Hawaiian slack-key guitar, Tex-Mex, gospel, country, vaudeville "coon songs," and most recently, with the Buena Vista Social Club, prerevolutionary Cuban music. He records with L.A. session players and various "ethnic" musicians in and out of their own contexts.

Cooder began playing the guitar when he was three years old. He has had a glass eye since he was four, when he accidentally stuck a knife in his left eye. In the early '60s Cooder became active in Southern California blues and folk circles, and in 1963 he played in an unsuccessful group with vocalist Jackie DeShannon. With Taj Mahal, another musical archivist, he started the Rising Sons in 1966. He also appears on Mahal's debut album. Cooder was a busy session player in the late '60s, working for Gordon Lightfoot and on numerous commercials. He was a member of Captain Beefheart's Safe As Milk (1967), although he quit just before Beefheart was scheduled to play the Monterey Pop Festival. Ever wondered why "Freebird" by Lynyrd Skynryd has never been on Guitar Hero or Rockband? Simple .. It cant be played by a mortal plastic guitar welding man. Ever wondered why the Creedence Clearwater Revival's song "Green River" [1969] sounds like the Hollies "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" [1972]? Answer ... Creedence Clearwater are one of the ~~finest~~ [nay, greatest] rock bands ever to exist. Coming from a time period that housed Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Doors, the Who and the Rolling Stones, they come from a most prestigious batch of the finest music [and musicians] ever to grace this planet. ~ crowbarred
What does "Ejector button" mean? [ahahaha]

If anything, CCR's third album "Green River"represents the full flower of their sound initially essayed on its predecessor, Bayou Country. One of the differences between the two albums is that Green River is tighter, with none of the five-minute-plus jams that filled out both their debut and Bayou Country, but the true key to its success is a peak in John Fogerty's creativity. Although CCR had at least one cover on each album, they relied on Fogerty to crank out new material every month. He was writing so frequently that the craft became second-nature and he laid his emotions and fears bare, perhaps unintentionally. Perhaps that's why Green River has fear, anger, dread, and weariness creeping on the edges of gleeful music. This was a band that played rock & roll so joyously that they masked the, well, "sinister" undercurrents in Fogerty's songs. "Bad Moon Rising" has the famous line "Hope you've got your things together/Hope you're quite prepared to die," but that was only the most obvious indication of Fogerty's gloom.

Consider all the other dark touches: the "Sinister purpose knocking at your door"; the chaos of "Commotion"; the threat of death in "Tombstone Shadow"; you only return to the idyllic "Green River" once you get lost and realize the "world is smolderin'." Even the ballads have a strong melancholy undercurrent, highlighted by "Lodi," where Fogerty imagines himself stuck playing in dead-end towns for the rest of his life. Not the typical thoughts of a newly famous rock & roller, but certainly an indication of Fogerty's inner tumult. Green River is a song that was written by John Fogerty and recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival. It is the title track of their #1 album with the same name. The song is about Putah Creek located near Winters, California. The song was released as a single and reached #2 on the Billboard Charts. As was common at the time, the B-side of the single, Commotion, also charted, reaching #30. It was CCR's third gold single.

Side Notes: Country band Alabama recorded a cover version of the song that appears on their 1982 album Mountain Music.

The camp site was run by a decendant of Buffalo Bill Cody. There was an old-fashioned drug store in Winters the had the old fountain drinks using syrup and carbonated water. The band's most sustained achievement, 1969's Green River, plays to these imagined Southern-gothic strengths. The title-track boogie offers an oasis of bucolic childhood memories to hide in when "the world is smolderin'." That's also the state of affairs in "Bad Moon Rising," which wraps a blithe rockabilly swing around a soothsayer's ominous vision of oncoming apocalypse. "Hope you are quite prepared to die" might be the most confrontational Vietnam War-era lyric to ever charm AM radio. Fogerty discovered his songwriting voice on 1969's auspicious Bayou Country when he further explored the Louisiana roots of CCR's hit "Suzie Q" cover. He wasn't, as his song proclaimed, "born on the bayou." Pass the salt

Rock critics [who get paid for their services] much like Rolling Stone magazine, are not in favour of Bloodhound Gang. It would appear the writing alumni feel it beneath themselves to write anything positive about Bloodhound Gang's smash hit - "Fire Water Burn" from 1996. Maybe they feel it perverts the course of ~~justice,~~ ~~integrity~~ and ~~honour~~ ROCK [or slightly disguised thereas, of course].

Various "piss takes" of Rock [or variants of rock genre] music over the past 50 years is not uncommon nor unpopular. classic examples of this can be found in the music charts for example - in 1963, [which won a Grammy no less] Allan Sherman's "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh" and no, it is not a muslim chant, was a very popular song and reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks.

Spinal Tap, which is regarded cerebrally by Rock and movie critics alike, is another successful attempt at "piss rock" with stupendous songs like "Break Like The Wind", Sex Farm & "Christmas With the Devil". With song titles like that, you cant go wrong.

I know, i am trying to convince you why "Bloodhound Gang's" song should be included in the Definitive 1000 of All Time, but a song should not have to be made of solely by some prestigious band with serious song writing creds ... and i will close my argument with a song that was never a hit anywhere in the world but is so instantly recognisable, you cannot help it but whistle it when you hear it. Dear Jury [and persecutors alike] ... i give you "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" by Eric Idle of Monty Python.

From King of Prussia, PA, the Bloodhound Gang hit the alternative charts in 1996 with a blend of obnoxious sexual innuendo and unpolitically correct stoner wit reminiscent of the early Beastie Boys -- mixing Punk Rock with hip-hop much as the Beasties had done. Frontman Jimmy Pop Ali and Lupus produced the band's first release, the 1994 Dingleberry Haze EP. A year later, the duo was signed to Columbia for their debut album, Use Your Fingers. After it flopped and Columbia dropped their contract, Ali and Lupus added bassist Evil Jared, drummer Spanky G and DJ Q-Ball for second LP One Fierce Beer Coaster. The Bloodhound Gang released the album in mid-1996 on the tiny Republic label, but moved back to a major label (DGC) later that year, thanks to MTV and alternative-radio airplay of the single "Fire Water Burn." The oft-delayed Hooray for Boobies followed in early 2000, and Bloodhound Gang scored a huge hit with the moronically appealing "Bad Touch." Set to a peppy new romantic synth beat, the song featured the classic couplet "You and me baby ain't nothin' but mammals/So let's do it like the do it on the Discovery Channel." "Fire Water Burn" is the second single from The Bloodhound Gang's 1996 (re-released in 1998) album One Fierce Beer Coaster. The chorus of the song is taken from the song The Roof Is on Fire by Rock Master Scott & the Dynamic Three, yet sung considerably slower. The song ranked among the top songs on the Billboard Charts in 1997, reaching #18 on the Modern Rock Tracks, and also #28 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks. It made number 4 on the Dutch Top 40. Fire Water Burn was remixed for the CD single by God Lives Underwater. It appeared in the soundtrack of Fahrenheit 9/11, The Nutty Professor and CKY4.

One Fierce Beer Coaster 1996

The song's music video features the band performing in a retirement home's cafeteria. As the song progresses, vocalist Jimmy Pop leaves the stage and begins performing numerous spontaneous actions in front of a group of unresponsive senior citizens, including dancing suggestively on tables and making unusual facial gestures. The video culminates when the elderly notice the band, and are rejuvenated by their performance. With the retirement home filled with a rock concert-like atmosphere, the band exits the stage with several senior citizens. The final shot of the video reveals that the retirement home was specially designated for the hearing impaired. What does RS think?

By turns offensive and just plain dorky, the Bloodhound Gang will not likely ever get much credit for being one of the earliest groups of suburban white guys to integrate rap into their rock and pop music. One Fierce Beer Coaster offers more of the same, but in smaller, more easy-to-swallow doses: There's the postmodern kitchen-sink pop references, the eager-to-offend lyrics ("I Wish I Was Queer So I Could Get Chicks," "Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny"), and the mix of rap rock with moments that indicate a wider musical palette. And "Fire Water Burn," which combines old-school hip-hop with Cake-like monotone and a Pixies quote, is accessible enough to have earned the group its first notable airplay. ~ [Source: RS 2004]

Sitting here with the love of my life sitting beside me I have a conflict of emotions and thoughts. This song made me realise a few things that I won’t go into detail on but lets just say, in back tracking to an earlier post about the next chapter. Hell’s bells .. some of my previous chapters I’ve come to realise just how much of a royal bitch I was to some. No I won’t apologise. For being such, I am who I am and where I am today because of it (them). [I took a break from writing it’s been a couple months since I started writing this]

Even the words of this song remind me of the past, I’m sitting here now a few months later smiling because of this song, I was such a bitch to the men in my life. I always ran from them when they tried to get close or I felt that they were getting to close. Made some excuse to leave. And it was an excuse because I never wanted what I now have. My new life has now become the only one I want. My man is the only one I’ve ever wanted just didnt know it back then. The things we learn as time goes on.

On a previous post, I mention chapters (as above) this is my final chapter. With this man, my life is complete; I searched the world over to find him on the next block so to speak. The search is over. Ahh to finally be so damn in love it pains the soul. Certain songs do that, they have the capability to linger stronger than photographs sometimes .. you can choose what you want to see but you can't always be in control of what you hear ~ Tez

In the U.S., Soft Cell, the British duo of singer Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball, were a classic one-hit wonder, that hit being the 1981-82 remake of Gloria Jones' "Tainted Love," which dominated dance clubs and eventually peaked in the pop Top Ten with its synth-pop sound and Almond's plaintive vocals. In the U.K., the group not only had a longer career, but also influenced a raft of similar performers. Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, originally released in Britain in the fall of 1981, contained both the band's first hit and its follow-up, "Bedsitter," its title referring to what in America would be called a studio apartment. (A third U.K. Top Five hit, "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye," [Covered by David Gray in 1998] emerged from the LP.) At full album length, lyricist Almond's primary preoccupation, only suggested in "Tainted Love," was spelled out; this was a theme album about aberrant sexuality, a tour of a red-light district. The point was well-made on "Sex Dwarf," with its oft-repeated chorus "Isn't it nice/Sugar and spice/Luring disco dollies to a life of vice?" Songs like "Seedy Films," "Entertain Me," and "Secret Life" expanded upon the subject. The insistent beats taken at steady dance tempos, and the chilling electronic sounds conjured by Ball emphasized Almond's fascination with deviance; it almost seemed as though the album had been designed to be played in topless bars. British listeners either saw through Almond's pretense or were amused by him, or both; more puritanical Americans tended to disapprove, which probably limited the group's long-term success stateside. But the music was undeniably influential. The 2002 CD reissue added two lengthy 12" single remixes of "Tainted Love," one of them a medley with the old Supremes hit "Where Did Our Love Go," the other a dub version. Gloria Jones [aka: Mrs T.Rex]

Pictured right: Gloria Jones recorded the original version of "Tainted Love", which was written and produced by Ed Cobb. The 1964 single was a commercial flop, failing to chart in either the US or the UK. The vocal-and-synth duo Soft Cell had become aware of the song through its status as a Northern Soul hit, and recorded a drastically different arrangement of "Tainted Love" in 1981. Produced by Mike Thorne, the Soft Cell track featured a slower tempo than Jones' version, and instrumentally relied on synthesisers and rhythm machines rather than the guitars, bass, drums and horns of the original. Soft Cell's version of the song was recorded in a day and a half with singer Marc Almond's first vocal take being ultimately used on the record.

A video for the track was recorded specially for their video album 'Non Stop Exotic Video' and features band members Marc Almond and David Ball in togas on Mount Olympus.
Soft Cell also issued a remixed version of the song in 1991. Another video was made for this release, and involves a male pacing at night and dancing with starry apparitions while Almond sings amongst the stars.

Soft Cell's version of "Tainted Love" ranked #2 on VH1's 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders but, oddly, only #5 on VH1's 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s.

Twisted and tainted in 2001

Marilyn Manson covered "Tainted Love" and released it as a single from the Not Another Teen Movie soundtrack. It was released in 2001. It was later included on his following album The Golden Age of Grotesque as a bonus track. Released in the UK in May 2002, it is Manson's biggest hit to date in that country, reaching a position of #5 in the UK Top 75 charts. The video for Manson's cover shows Manson bringing several goth friends to a high school party. It features several characters from the film Not Another Teen Movie. It also features Joey Jordison, the drummer from Slipknot. ~

To English popmusic fans, there is nothing like a good six-month fad. The punk explosion, the warmed-over mods, the ska craze and the psychedelic revival–don't look now, but you just missed the New Romantics–have come and gone (and in some cases, come again) with such confounding rapidity that it is hard to take most of them any more seriously than Hula Hoops or edible underwear. The Soft Cell twosome of Marc Almond and David Ball walks on a much wilder side, bringing the brainy bop of OMD down to a lurid red-light-district level on their debut album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. Where the eagles soar

Balance is the key element of the Eagles' self-titled debut album, a collection that contains elements of rock & roll, folk, and country, overlaid by vocal harmonies alternately suggestive of doo wop, the Beach Boys, and the Everly Brothers. If the group kicks up its heels on rockers like "Chug All Night," "Nightingale," and "Tryin'," it is equally convincing on ballads like "Most of Us Are Sad" and "Train Leaves Here This Morning." The album is also balanced among its members, who trade off on lead vocal chores and divide the songwriting such that Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner all get three writing or co-writing credits. (Fourth member Don Henley, with only one co-writing credit and two lead vocals, falls a little behind, while Jackson Browne, Gene Clark, and Jack Tempchin also figure in the writing credits.) The album's overall balance is worth keeping in mind because it produced three Top 40 hit singles (all of which turned up on the massively popular Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975) that do not reflect that balance. "Take It Easy" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" are similar-sounding mid-tempo folk-rock tunes sung by Frey that express the same sort of laid-back philosophy, as indicated by the word "easy" in both titles, while "Witchy Woman," a Henley vocal and co-composition, initiates the band's career-long examination of supernaturally evil females. These are the songs one remembers from Eagles, and they look forward to the eventual dominance of the band by Frey and Henley. But the complete album from which they come belongs as much to Leadon's country-steeped playing and singing and to Meisner's melodic rock & roll feel, which, on the release date, made it seem a more varied and consistent effort than it did later, when the singles had become overly familiar. ~ [William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide]

Peaceful Easy Feeling AKA: The Dude

In the 1998 film The Big Lebowski, this song plays when Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski is in a cab after Malibu's police chief orders him out of town. Being very worn out and not liking the Eagles, The Dude angers the cab driver after requesting him to change the station. After The Dude complains some more, the cab driver pulls over and forces him out of the cab.

Also noted: "It got to the part where the Dude says, 'I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man!' Klein stands up and says, 'That's it, you can have the song!' That was beautiful"

The Eagles' debut created a new template for laid-back L.A. country-rock style. Behind the band's mellow message -- "Take It Easy," "Peaceful Easy Feeling" -- was a relentless drive. Now the album is here, and it's awfully good. The song has a warmly intense Glen Frey vocal, and the Eagles' clear harmonies glide around its edges.
